phancy.com notes: A successful depiction of the slow madness of trying to understand something which cannot be understood. Yes, Nicolas Cage goes crazy, but he does it with nuance, and the rest of the cast is great as well. The direction does a great job keeping a comprehendible narrative while reality constantly shifts in ever more disturbing ways.

Both as an effective cinematic translation of Lovecraft's particular literary skills, and as a freakout of the first order with sights and sounds that will not be easily forgotten, this is one of those films that I suspect is going to grow in significance and popularity in due time. Hopefully it will serve as just the first of many collaborations between Stanley and Cage, two decidedly kindred artistic spirits.

Color Out Of Space combines Nic Cage, Richard Stanley, and H.P. Lovecraft to predictably wild effect
At this point, Nicolas Cage the meme has overtaken Nicolas Cage the person, and the mere mention of his name is enough to send a certain subset of filmgoers into a hysterical giggle fit. And with this unspoken set of expectations looming in the background, it takes a visionary director to keep the circus inside the tent, so to speak. Color Out Of Space adds Richard Stanley - a noted wild man in his own right - to the short list of directors who are well matched with late-period Cage, a list that also includes Werner Herzog and Panos Cosmatos, who built an indie hit out of psychedelic atmosphere and Cage hysterics with 2018's Mandy. Color Out Of Space also has both of those things, but with the added benefit of thematic depth and developed characters.
